Maui Grinds

Paia to Hana

Even on the Road To Hana there are gastronomic treats if your taste is up for a challenge. Some of Maui’s best fish and vegetarian food can be found in Paia. Or you can go off the beaten track for our favorite hot dog in Haiku.

This restaurant is named after a dog, the late Charley P. Woofer, so it’s a local favorite. Actually, it’s the bar around back that attracts. Generous and reasonably priced breakfasts include omelettes and pancakes. Burgers, pizza, salads and soups are for lunch. Dinner entrees include chicken, kiawe smoked ribs and fish.

Sunday from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. is a "Sunday Jam", featuring live music. Open daily, serving breakfast (except Sundays) from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., lunch from 11:30 to 2:00 p.m., and dinner from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. 142 Hana Hwy. (808) 579-9453

Spinach nutburger is the signature dish at Picnics. Stop here and stock up on picnic fare for the drive to Hana or Upcountry. Or try the rosemary roasted chicken plate lunch, fish and chips,, shrimp and chips and fresh baked pastries. Daily 7-7 30 Baldwin Avenue (808) 579-8021

Locals love the plate lunch at Kitada's Kau Kau Korner. So much that you'll have trouble getting in for a taste of the spare ribs with the traditional two scoops rice, macaroni salad and salt cabbage. The prices are way low. Come any time from 6:00 a.m. a.m. to 1:30 p.m. 3617 Baldwin Ave. 572-7241

Means "miraculous" which the food isn't but it's tasty enough and the outdoor tables are perfect place to sit and watch Paia's passing parade which is often "wonderful." 3 Baldwin Ave. (808) 579-8755
