Maui Grinds

Dining from one end of Upcountry to the other is a 30 mile drive. We'll start in Makawao which will take us from Hawaii Regional cuisine through Local and Mexican to Italian.

Hailimaile General Store

The ladies who lunch Upcountry lunch at the Hailimaile General Store in guess where? This was a 1929 vintage general store in the middle of a 1,000-acre pineapple plantation. Bev and Joe Gannon turned it into a fine restaurant serving Hawaii Regional cuisine. You can try things like sashimi Napoleon, paniolo ribs, rack of lamb Hunan style, Bev's boboli, lobster ragout, and Szechuan barbecued salmon.

"Come on in and eat or we'll both starve" says the sign in front of Polli's in Makawao. Fortunately, the big portions of Mexican burritos, enchiladas and salsa are tasty and inexpensive so you can take this advice with confidence. Add a bottle of Dos Equis or a Margerhita and you'll have a fun, if noisy, lunch or dinner. 1202 Makawao Ave., 572-7808

Casanova Italian Restaurant and Deli

Sit on the porch and watch the crowd go by as you enjoy some of Casanova's delicious Italian deli with a cappuccino. The polenta pizza is so tasty. Come back in the evening for an excellent dinner inside. The chef does dishes like tagliatelle with lemon cream sauce blanketed with smoked salmon. The pizzas are cooked in an authentic wood-fired oven.
