"Come on in and eat or we'll both starve" says the sign in front of Polli's in Makawao. Fortunately, the big portions of Mexican burritos, enchiladas and salsa are tasty and inexpensive so you can take this advice with confidence. Locals say the Pukalani Country Club has da kine Hawaiian food. So, drop in for a lunch or dinner of lomi salmon, lau lau, ka lua pig and poi. There's a big salad bar including our favorite Portuguese bean soup and a more traditional menu of fish, chicken and steak. Halfway on the road to the Crater is a good place to stop for a breakfast of Kula lodge corned beef hash, Belgian waffles, eggs Benedict and tofu scramble. A lobby fireplace and large picture windows with an expansive view of West Maui are a bonus. Dinner a great sunset along with a selection of vegetarian dishes made with fresh Maui-grown ingredients, as well as meat and fish entrees. They roast their own, home-grown coffee at Grandma's Coffee House in Keokea where Alfred Franco carries on the traditions Grandma taught him. Stop by for a cup and a cinnamon roll or muffin on your way to Tedeschi Winery.
