(Beloperone
guttata) The
curving flower clusters covered with rose bracts sure look
like shrimp. You'll see them as colorful hedges on
Maui. (Argemone
glauca) A
dry side plant that contains opiates used by ancient
Hawaiians for pain. (?) Bright,
happy looking flower that grows on a vine along many
upcountry fences.
(Antigonum
leptopus) Heart shaped
buds, flowers and leaves make this easy to identify, even if
you could overlook the intense magenta blossoms. ((Plumbago
auriculata) Hedges
of these shrubs with their pale blue flowers are all over
Upcountry. (Rhododenron
indicum) A
Japanese garden ornamental with bright red flowers grown as
a shrub in many gardens. .
Protea Proteas
are native to South Africa but are a major floral crop on
Maui where they grow well at higher altitudes. You'll see
them in bouquets and at the protea farms upcountry. There
are so many varieties we can't pretend to identify
them.
